Parasite Control Programmes

Pets are at risk from parasites throughout their lives and reducing/eliminating parasites is an ongoing part of owning a pet. Our aim is to help you find out the risks to your pet, and potentially your family, and set up a control programme which best suits your circumstances.

External parasites.
Fleas and ticks are the most common parasites and prevention is much easier than a cure!
Which product is best suited will depend on your family circumstances.
There are a number of products available including topical preparations injectable preps and tablets.

Advocate Topical Preparation	Kills adult fleas very effectively and will help control eggs Kills round worms and prevents reinfestation. Kills ear mites and mange. Effective in controlling lung worm (spread by snails/slugs) Applied monthly.
Advantage Topical Preparation	Kills adult fleas very effectively and will help control eggs and larvae in the house. Applied monthly.
Practic/Effipro/Frontline *Friprospot* Topical Preparation	Kills fleas very effectively for at least a month. Kills ticks very effectively for a month. Does not prevent tick attaching.
Advantix (dogs only) Topical Preparation	The product of choice for high risk tick infections and will prevent most tick from attaching. Kills adult fleas very effectively and will help control eggs.
ProgramPlus for dogs Tablets	Prevents flea eggs from hatching. Contains a broad spectrum wormer Is given monthly .
Program Injection for cats	Prevents flea eggs from hatching. Is given every 6 months
Comfortis for dogs	Tasty tablet given monthly Highly effective against adult fleas 100% effective within 4 hrs Ideal for swimmers/dogs with skin complaints that require regular bathing.
Serseto Collars For cats and dogs	New technology designed into collar so unlike conventional collars Kills adult fleas very effectively and will help control eggs and larvae in the house. Very effective at repelling and killing ticks Efficacy not reduced by swimming Lasts for 6-8 months

Worming.

Roundworm eggs are picked up from the environment where other dogs and cats have defaecated.
Tapeworms are picked up by eating infested fleas, eating prey or from scavenging rabbit carcases.

Frequency of worming treatments will depend on lifestyle, and will vary from monthly to every 3 months. If you have young children for example, you may wish to treat against Toxocara on a monthly basis to prevent any worm eggs from shed, which could be harmful to children.
There is now a choice of spot on formulations, as well as tablets, to treat and prevent all types of roundworm and tapeworm infestation.
